Sioux City Public Museum

The Sioux City Public Museum preserves the local history of the Sioux City area. The museum has Native American and pioneer artifacts, historic transportation vehicles, fossils, and much more. 

The land of Sioux City was populated by Native Americans when European travelers first arrived in the area. The museum contains exhibits about the Lakota, the Omaha, and the Ho-Chunk people. 

The museum moved to a new location in 2011. It was previously located in the Peirce Mansion from 1960-2011. The Sioux City Public Museum is free and open to the public. 

The Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Sioux City

The Orpheum Theatre is a performance art venue in Downtown Sioux City. Built in 1927, the Orpheum was the largest theatre in the state at the time. It was closed in 1992 and then remodeled and opened back up in 2001. 

The Orpheum Theatre now hosts a diversity of entertainment including concerts, theater, film showings, and kid events. Some of the theatre’s performers since the re-opening are Alison Kraus, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Jerry Seinfeld, Olivia Newton-John, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, and many more! Sioux City Symphony Orchestra plays out of The Orpheum Theatre. 

Stone State Park in Sioux City, IA

Stone State Park is an Iowa state park with 1,069 acres of land in the Loess Hills. Visitors can walk, fish, and camp. The park has a diversity of specialty trails including cross-country skiing, equine, mountain biking, and snowmobile trails. The Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center is also located in the park. 

The forests in the Stone State Park are mostly bur oak. You can observe the park’s beautiful wildflowers in the spring. While out in the state park, you might see white-tailed deer or wild turkeys. Before European settlers arrived, Native Americans hunted in the area that later became Stone State Park.
